Baptist Hospital Foundation

Saying thanks by giving back

The gifts program at Baptist Hospital Northeast

Many people ask how they can say "thank you" for the care they or a loved one received at Baptist Hospital Northeast. Thank you letters are always welcome, but a special way to honor a talented and caring nurse, employee or physician is with a gift in honor and recognition of the care they provided. Or, celebrate the life of a loved one with a gift in his or her honor or memory.

Through donations to the Baptist Hospital Foundation, Baptist Northeast can provide many programs and services that enhance the quality of care given. Gifts from members of the community allow nurses and other staff members to receive additional education and training. Donations allow us to provide needed assistance for our indigent patients while helping us make every patient’s hospital stay a little more comfortable. Your support also allows the hospital to meet the healthcare needs we know about today, and be prepared to meet the healthcare needs of tomorrow.

The changes in healthcare in the last decade have made it increasingly challenging for Baptist Northeast to rely solely on traditional forms of payment, such as Medicare and managed care, to provide the kind of healing environment our patients want and have come to expect.   Through the Foundation and your support of it, we believe that we will continue to exemplify the heritage of caring that has made us the healthcare provider of choice in our community.

Memorial and honorary gifts

Often family members and friends want to honor the memory of a loved one or express their appreciation for the care received by making a donation. A memorial gift to the Baptist Hospital Foundation provides a meaningful symbol of respect, gratitude and love. Memorial and honorary gifts also may be designated to a particular designated hospital fund such as the Staff Development Fund or Indigent Care Fund.

In the case of a memorial gift, the Foundation will notify the appropriate family member or loved one of your kind thoughts and action. In the case of a gift made in honor of an individual, the Foundation will let them know of your generous display of appreciation for him/her. We will work with you to ensure that we get the acknowledgement to the correct/best person.

Greatest need

As healthcare changes, so does the way Baptist Northeast delivers care to patients. Because of the need for flexibility, the hospital must have the ability to respond to areas with the greatest need. Gifts that are not earmarked for a specific hospital program can be quickly directed where they are needed most. In this way, Baptist Northeast can remain on the leading edge of patient care.

Ways of giving

The ways of giving are many and varied, from the simplicity of writing a check to donating appreciated securities or real estate to making a provision that will benefit Baptist Northeast after your death. Some of the most common methods are discussed below. For more information regarding specific gift arrangements, call the Baptist Hospital Foundation at (502) 896-7495 or e-mail us at foundation-information@bhsi.com.

  • Gifts of cash. Cash gifts, usually made by check or credit card, are the most common form of donation. Provided you itemize your deductions, cash gifts are deductible in the year the gift is made to the extent the law allows.  The Foundation will provide you with a letter of substantiation for tax purposes.
  • Gifts of appreciated securities. Giving appreciated securities that have been held longer than one year may offer a significant tax advantage. Donors may be able to avoid capital gains tax and receive a charitable tax deduction for the fair market value of the securities.  Those wanting to make a gift of appreciated stocks, bonds or mutual fund shares should instruct their broker to contact the Baptist Hospital Foundation office for additional information. If you are personally holding the shares or securities, the Foundation staff can work with you to handle the gift according to your wishes.
  • Matching gifts. Many companies provide matching gifts for their employees and other eligible individuals. This allows your gift to be doubled and sometimes tripled. Please include your company’s matching gift form with your gift. To find out if your employer matches donations, contact your company’s Human Resources department or call the Baptist Hospital Foundation
  • Bequests. You may name the Baptist Hospital Foundation as a beneficiary in your will. Typically, donors provide either a specific amount or a percentage of the estate for the hospital’s benefit. The hospital can also be a residual beneficiary of your estate, receiving funds after the payment of bequests to others. Please have your legal counsel contact the Foundation Office for specifics that will make the process easier today, and in the future.
  • Gifts that provide an income. There are a number of charitable gift arrangements that provide a gift to the hospital and income to you and/or your spouse for life. Often the amount of income is more than can be realized by other conservative investments. The Foundation staff will be glad to offer insight on these options, and will put you in touch with professional financial/legal advisors if you do not have one currently.
  • Gifts of real estate. Gifts of real estate that have appreciated in value may provide a significant tax advantage. Donors may deduct the fair market value of the gift up to 30 percent of adjusted gross income with a five-year carry over provision. Additionally, donors do not pay capital gains taxes on the appreciated value of the real estate. Furthermore, you may give your residence to the Baptist Hospital Foundation and retain residency for your life, the life of your spouse, or a set number of years.

Donor counsel

The Baptist Hospital Foundation is pleased to work with donors to determine the best way to make a gift to the hospital, but you are encouraged to consult your own financial advisor before finalizing a gift.
