Baptist Health La Grange is a Primary Stroke Center

Baptist Health La Grange has been named a Certified Primary Stroke Center by the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP). The designation means Baptist Health La Grange meets national quality standards for excellence in stroke care.

To achieve certification, Baptist Health La Grange formed and trained a stroke response team which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to rapidly treat stroke patients when they come to the Emergency Department. The team also began closely monitoring all aspects of the stroke care process to ensure quality care was provided based on evidence-based national guidelines.

As the public has become more aware of the signs of stroke, and with the help of knowledgeable EMS staff, more individuals are arriving at the hospital within the narrow three- to four and a half-hour time frame from symptom onset so that they may receive the only FDA approved drug, tissue plasminogen activator or t-PA. Baptist Health La Grange provides education at more than 80 local community events per year to increase awareness so that members of the community have the option to receive this life-saving treatment.

Similar to the rest of the United States, approximately 87 percent of stroke patients seen at Baptist Health La Grange have ischemic strokes – those caused by a blocked blood vessel. Baptist Health La Grange has provided t-PA to 100 percent of the patients who met the time criteria, and 16 percent of the overall ischemic stroke patients treated through the first three quarters of 2013. The national average is only 3.1 percent.

To receive designation as a Primary Stroke Center, Baptist Health La Grange’s stroke program went through a rigorous application process. Data was submitted on stroke admissions, treatment plans and outcomes. HFAP surveyors conducted an on-site review in October recognizing the excellent care and outcomes Baptist Health LaGrange has achieved since the creation of its stroke program. HFAP launched its Stroke Center certification program in 2006. Baptist Health La Grange is the only hospital in Kentucky with Primary Stroke Center certification from HFAP.
