Smith receives Volunteer Association scholarship

Megan Smith and Alta HaunszThe Volunteer Association of Baptist Hospital Northeast recently awarded a $2,000 scholarship to Megan Smith, 18, daughter of Jerry and Debra Smith, Bedford.

Smith is a 2009 graduate of Trimble County High School. She plans to attend the University of Louisville or Jefferson Community College and major in nursing. Her future plans include working as a pediatric nurse or in labor and delivery in a hospital.

“I want to say thanks to the Volunteer Association for giving me the opportunity to win this scholarship,” Smith said. “It’s going to help a lot to pay for the cost of college.” Seniors in Oldham, Henry and Trimble counties who planned to enroll in an accredited college or university and pursue a career in healthcare were eligible for the scholarship. Entries were judged on the basis of personal and professional goals, achievements, counselor comments and financial need. This is the 14th consecutive year that the Volunteer Association has awarded a scholarship, the purpose of which is to encourage young people to enter healthcare careers.

The Volunteer Association currently has 60 members from around the area who provide assistance in several areas of the hospital. In addition, 13 teen volunteers worked at the hospital this summer.
