Medical and Surgical Services

Medical/Surgical and Telemetry Unit

Baptist Health La Grange's 38-bed Medical/Surgical Unit provides inpatient medical and surgical care. Whether you're hospitalized for surgery, cancer or a bout with pneumonia, you'll receive quality care in a warm, family atmosphere.

Staffed around the clock by registered nurses, licensed pracMedical and Surgical Services at Baptist Northeasttical nurses and nursing assistants, our Med/Surg Unit includes 22 private and six semi-private rooms. Our modified primary care model makes the nursing staff more available to patients and their families.

Telemetry

Sixteen telemetry units, which allow heart rate to be monitored at all times, are available for patients with potential or actual cardiac arrhythmias. A monitor tech is on duty 24 hours a day at the nurses station and all nurses on the Med/Surg Unit are also trained to read monitors.

Discharge

After an illness or major surgery, the prospect of leaving the hospital can be frightening. That's why Baptist Health La Grange works closely with patients and their families to prepare them for going home. Our Logicare system provides large print discharge instructions with detailed information on the care you'll need at home. Discharge planners work closely with the nursing staff to arrange for any special health services or equipment you will need during your recovery.

Intensive Care/Critical Care Unit (ICCU)

Baptist Health La Grange's seven-bed ICCU cares for patients in critical or unstable condition. Patients are continuously monitored using monitoring equipment. The unit is staffed by nurses who are certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and have been specially trained to care for critically ill patients.

Visitation

Because patients on the ICCU are seriously ill, visitation is limited to immediate family only. This includes husband, wife, mother, father, sisters, brothers and children. Two family members may visit at the same time.

Visitation is allowed at all times except during shift changes (7-8 a.m. and 7-8 p.m.). Sometimes visits must be delayed for a short time due to an emergency or special procedure. If this should happen, we will inform you of the delay, and you will be notified as soon as possible for your visit.

Waiting area

A family waiting area is located just down the hall. There is a phone in the waiting room. Feel free to give this number to your other family members and friends: (502) 222-3341. An intercom system is also available in the waiting room for direct communication with the nursing staff, when needed. If you should leave the waiting area, you may leave a number where you can be reached with the unit nurse, in case there is a change in the condition of your family member.

Special programs for surgery patients

Pre-Admission testing and education: Being informed on what to expect before, during and after surgery is the best way for patients to feel calm and assured before a procedure. Baptist Health La Grange has pre-operative registered nurses who meet with patients prior to their surgery date to provide pre-op testing, education and instructions. This service is offered in the Ambulatory Care Center, near Outpatient Registration and the Emergency Department, and takes about a half hour. For more information, or to schedule an appointment, call Pre-Admission Testing at (502) 222-3892.

Pre-surgery testing: Your doctor may want you to have certain laboratory tests or X-rays before your surgery. To begin your testing, you must register in Admitting. You can have your tests done up to five days prior to your surgery date, unless otherwise directed by your physician.

Pre-surgery testing is offered Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. except on holidays. Allow one to two hours for the process to be completed unless additional tests (special X-rays and consultations) are needed. For minor procedures, such as lab testing, and if your age is under 40, allow approximately 30 minutes to an hour.

Your physician's office will inform you when your pre-surgery testing is scheduled.

Total joint camp: Patients scheduled for total hip or total knee replacement surgery at Baptist Health La Grange can attend a total joint camp. The camp is held each Monday for approximately three hours. Have your pre-admission testing, visit areas of the hospital where you might be during your stay and see a presentation to help prepare you for surgery and recovery. Your orthopedic surgeon can schedule you for the total joint camp.Find out more about Orthopedic Services at Baptist Health La Grange.

Financial arrangements: Before you have surgery, you should contact your insurance company to determine coverage and to satisfy any eligibility requirements. If you do not have insurance, please contact Patient Accounts at (502) 222-5388 or 222-3385 before surgery. A Patient Accounts representative will explain the hospital's deposit requirement and help you work out a payment plan.

Family waiting area: For your family and friends, Baptist Health La Grange has a spacious waiting area. The hospital provides coffee, and visitor meals (breakfast and lunch) can be purchased in the cafeteria. Vending machines are available in the waiting area and in the cafeteria's Refreshment Center, which is open 24 hours a day and offers a hot food vending machine which cooks and serves pizza, chicken strips and french fries.

Family visitation before and after surgery: Baptist Health La Grange has private pre-operative and recovery areas so your family and friends can be with you before and after surgery.

Follow-up phone call: Patients who are discharged the day of their surgery receive a follow-up phone call from a registered nurse one or two days after discharge. During the call, you will have a chance to ask questions about diet, medications, exercise and other aspects of your recovery. The nurse will also assess your physical condition and make sure you are complying with any special instructions you received from your physician.
