Safe Sitter Class
Several times throughout the year, Baptist Health La Grange offers Safe Sitter, a medically accurate program to teach boys and girls ages 11 to 13 how to handle emergencies when caring for young children. The goal of Safe Sitter is to reduce accidental and preventable deaths among children being cared for by babysitters.
Young children are not always capable of communicating their needs or protecting themselves, but the babysitter must be able to handle whatever situation arises. That's why Safe Sitters learn basic lifesaving and safety techniques such as:
- What to do when a child stops breathing or chokes;
- How to call for emergency help;
- Basic child care skills, such as diapering and feeding; and
- How to entertain children and keep them safe.
Safe Sitters also receive helpful tips to make them more confident caregivers and learn safety and security precautions, such as what to do if a stranger comes to the door and how to call for help. They also receive information on child development and age-appropriate activities, while learning about the business of babysitting.
During the course, participants get hands-on practice in basic lifesaving techniques so they are prepared to act accordingly in a crisis situation. Participants must also pass a rigorous practical and written test to show they have mastered the key concepts and have the skills necessary to handle an emergency.
Course fee is $45, which includes breakfast, lunch, snack and refreshments for graduation ceremony, as well as a messenger bag and other useful items. Paid registration is due two weeks in advance. Scholarships are available based on financial need. Class size is limited, so early registration is recommended.
